Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Lagos State Government to immediately stop the ongoing violent forced evictions taking place in the Oworonshoki communities, describing the demolitions as brutal and inhumane.

According to the human rights organisation, the most recent round of demolitions has left hundreds of families displaced and traumatized, as bulldozers reportedly tore through homes while residents were still inside.

Amnesty International further revealed that security operatives fired tear gas canisters to disperse residents, creating chaos and forcing families to flee their homes with little or no belongings.

“The government of Lagos state must halt its violent forced evictions going on at Oworonshoki communities. This round of demolition is so violent to the extent that some homes were torn apart by bulldozers while families were still inside. Security operatives fired tear gas canisters that scattered hundreds of families,” Amnesty International stated.

The organisation strongly condemned the state government’s approach, accusing it of punishing low-income residents for the government’s own urban planning failures.

“Lagos state government must halt these attacks on people living in poverty. Punishing some people — because of their social status — for the state’s urban planning failures is unacceptable,” the statement added.

The rights group urged authorities to adopt a humane and lawful approach that respects the rights and dignity of affected residents, while providing adequate housing alternatives and compensation.

The Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official response to the allegations as of press time.
