The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a total and indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on Friday at exactly 11:59 p.m., plunging the nation’s public health sector into another wave of uncertainty.

The association made the announcement after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council, citing the federal government’s continued failure to meet several outstanding demands, including improved welfare, payment of arrears, and provision of medical infrastructure.

According to NARD, the decision to embark on an indefinite strike became necessary after repeated dialogues and ultimatums failed to yield any concrete commitments from the authorities.

The group said the industrial action would affect all federal and state-owned hospitals across the country, raising fears of disruption in essential medical services and increased strain on already burdened healthcare facilities.

Health experts have warned that the strike could further endanger lives, especially in critical units such as emergency wards, maternity sections, and intensive care units.

NARD has, however, stated that the strike would continue until the government meets its key demands, emphasizing that the doctors are no longer willing to tolerate the “poor working conditions and neglect” that have plagued the health system for years.

Government representatives are yet to issue an official response as of the time of filing this report.
