Tension continues to rise in Lagos as residents of Oworonshoki decry the ongoing demolition exercise, which has displaced scores of families and triggered widespread outrage across the state.

Several affected residents and witnesses have accused government agents of using violence and excessive force during the operation, alleging that homes were destroyed while people were still inside.

One victim shared his harrowing experience, recounting how the demolition team stormed his residence and assaulted him without provocation.

“I was in my room before you know it, they came to my room and started beating me. They came with stone, stick and teargas. Look at what they did to me. I am a citizen of Nigeria and I am from Lagos State,” the man lamented.

Many residents have described the demolitions as “state-backed brutality” and “a direct assault on the poor,” accusing the government of disregarding basic human rights and due process.

Angry citizens have taken to social media, condemning the government’s actions and calling for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently intervene.

“This is what you get for staying in your own country. The government keeps assaulting its own citizens at every level. The ongoing demolition in Oworonshoki is totally uncalled for. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, call your rabid dogs to order!” one post read.

Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International Nigeria, have also criticised the demolitions, urging the state government to stop the violent forced evictions and provide alternative housing solutions for affected families.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government has not released an official statement regarding the allegations of violence or the humanitarian crisis resulting from the demolitions.
