The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerian youths to uphold integrity, discipline, and ethical values as they strive to become the nation’s future leaders. He made this appeal during an orientation and sensitization programme held for new students of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Nigerian Air Force Base, Mando, Kaduna, on Monday, October 27, 2025.
Speaking through Chief Superintendent of the EFCC (CSE) Nana Fatima Abubakar of the Public Affairs Department, Kaduna Zonal Directorate, Olukoyede delivered a lecture titled “The Dangers of Cybercrime,” where he highlighted the far-reaching effects of internet fraud on individuals and the country at large.
He emphasized that there is no shortcut to wealth, urging students to embrace hard work, perseverance, and dedication as the true paths to success. According to him, the obsession with quick riches often ends in regret, manifesting in loss of freedom, damage to reputation, depression, and in some cases, untimely death.
“Many young people today fall into the trap of cybercrime due to peer pressure, greed, lack of patriotism, and laziness. Sadly, these acts are now closely linked to drug abuse and ritual practices,” he said.
Olukoyede encouraged the youth to channel their creativity and digital skills into legitimate ventures such as tech innovation, freelancing, and online entrepreneurship. He noted that the same internet space misused for fraud could be a platform for global opportunities and positive impact.
He also warned of the devastating national impact of cybercrime, including reputational damage to Nigeria’s image abroad and a decline in foreign investor confidence.
The EFCC boss called on the students to take an active role in the fight against corruption and cybercrime by reporting suspicious activities through the EFCC’s Eagle Eye App, which allows citizens to report crimes anonymously and securely.
The sensitization programme was part of the EFCC’s ongoing campaign to educate and engage Nigerian youth in the collective effort to curb cybercrime and promote integrity-driven leadership across the country.
