Amnesty International has condemned in the strongest terms the deadly attack on worshippers during dawn prayers at a mosque in Na’alma Village, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, calling it another tragic reminder of Nigeria’s deepening insecurity and the authorities’ failure to protect citizens.
According to eyewitness reports, the armed assailants—commonly referred to as bandits—stormed the mosque in the early hours of the morning, opening fire on worshippers gathered for prayers. While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, local sources say several lives were lost, with dozens still missing after trying to flee the scene. Many of the injured are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.
This latest assault comes less than two months after a similar attack in Unguwan Mantau Village, within the same local government area, where over 50 worshippers were killed in cold blood.
Amnesty International expressed grave concern over the repeated cycle of violence and the government’s inability to hold perpetrators accountable. The organization noted that the routine issuance of press statements by both federal and state authorities condemning such incidents is no longer sufficient.
“The Nigerian authorities must move beyond mere words and demonstrate genuine commitment to the protection of lives and property,” Amnesty International stated. “Bringing the attackers to justice is essential to ending this climate of fear and impunity that has left rural communities constantly bracing for the next assault.”
The rights group emphasized that the consistent failure to investigate and prosecute those responsible for these atrocities has only emboldened armed groups, leaving communities vulnerable and distrustful of the government’s promises of security.
The organization urged Nigerian leaders to deploy adequate security, ensure swift investigations, and provide justice and support for victims and their families, stressing that the right to life and safety must not be reduced to a mere political slogan.
