The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reiterated its commitment to working closely with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to tackle human trafficking, stowaway incidents, and the illegal trade in endangered species.

The pledge was made by Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, during a courtesy visit by a NAPTIP delegation at the Customs House in Maitama, Abuja, on Tuesday, 28 October 2025. CGC Adeniyi lauded NAPTIP’s efforts in safeguarding vulnerable populations and assured them of full Customs support in operational and strategic interventions.

Adeniyi emphasized the need for inter-agency collaboration, noting that modern security challenges cannot be addressed in isolation. “We believe in the power of collaboration. We can achieve more with less when we work together,” he stated, highlighting Customs’ ongoing efforts in environmental protection and enforcement of international conventions on flora and fauna.

The CGC further confirmed that the Service would actively participate in the upcoming national dialogue on human trafficking and stowaway incidents scheduled for February 2026, offering technical expertise, intelligence sharing, and access to training programs to enhance inter-agency understanding of trafficking dynamics.

NAPTIP Director-General, Binta Adamu, welcomed the engagement, stressing the importance of Customs as a strategic partner in border security and maritime enforcement. She highlighted that human trafficking continues to evolve, making close coordination between agencies at Nigeria’s entry and exit points essential.

Speaking on the significance of the collaboration, former NIMASA Director of Public Relations, Lami Tumaka, explained that Customs officers serve as the first line of defense against illicit movement of goods and people, making their participation crucial for the success of initiatives aimed at combating human trafficking and stowaway operations by sea.

The meeting underscored the mutual commitment to strengthen operational partnerships, share intelligence, and promote effective policy development to protect citizens and preserve Nigeria’s borders.
