The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has filed a lawsuit against the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, alleging a plot to impeach him for refusing to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to sources close to the deputy governor, the impeachment threat emerged after Ewhrudjakpo reportedly declined pressure to join another political party, a move that has created tension within the state’s political circle.
Ewhrudjakpo’s legal team confirmed that a suit has been filed to challenge what they describe as a “politically motivated and unconstitutional attempt” to remove him from office.
Details of the suit, filed at a competent court of jurisdiction, seek to restrain the assembly from proceeding with any impeachment actions pending the determination of the case.
While the Bayelsa State House of Assembly is yet to issue an official response, political observers believe the development could trigger a fresh round of political realignments ahead of upcoming elections in the state.
