The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a significant policy change affecting immigrants seeking to renew their Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). Under the new rule, certain categories of immigrants will no longer receive automatic extensions of their work permits during the renewal process.
Officials from DHS explained that the policy shift is part of broader measures aimed at enhancing national security and public safety. The agency noted that the previous automatic extension provision allowed some individuals to continue working while their EAD renewal applications were pending. This provision will now be discontinued for select groups, requiring applicants to maintain valid authorization before their permits expire.
Immigrant advocacy groups have expressed concern over the potential disruptions this could cause, warning that many workers could face gaps in employment authorization while awaiting renewal decisions. DHS, however, maintains that the change is necessary to ensure compliance with U.S. immigration laws and to strengthen the oversight of work authorization programs.
Affected individuals are encouraged to review DHS guidelines carefully and submit renewal applications well in advance of their permit expiration dates to avoid unintended lapses in work authorization.
