In a historic and unprecedented move, King Charles III has stripped his brother, Prince Andrew, of all remaining royal titles and honours and ordered him to vacate his official residence following renewed scrutiny over his connection to convicted s+x offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday that the king had “initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew,” marking the first time in over a century that a British royal has been stripped of such status. Andrew will now be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and will relocate from the Royal Lodge to private accommodation on the Sandringham estate.
The decision comes amid mounting public and political pressure after new evidence revealed that Andrew maintained contact with Epstein longer than previously disclosed. The controversy resurfaced following the posthumous release of Nobody’s Girl, a memoir by Epstein victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who accused Andrew of s+xual abuse when she was 17. Giuffre, who passed away in April, had reached a multimillion-pound settlement with Andrew in 2022 without him admitting wrongdoing.
A Buckingham Palace statement described the king’s action as a response to “serious lapses of judgement,” emphasizing that “Their Majesties’ sympathies remain with victims and survivors of all forms of ab¥se.”
Skye Roberts, Giuffre’s brother, praised the move as justice for his late sister, saying, “An ordinary American girl brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage.”
Earlier this month, Andrew had already relinquished the title Duke of York; the latest action strips him of all remaining honours, including the Order of the Garter and Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
