Justice Osho Adebiyi of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Abuja, has sentenced 19-year-old school teacher, Abdullahi Abbass, to life imprisonment for the r*pe of a 9-year-old pupil in the Kwali Area Council of the FCT.
Delivering judgment, Justice Adebiyi held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that the convict took advantage of his pupil, violating both her innocence and the trust reposed in him as a teacher.
The court condemned the act as “inhuman and morally reprehensible,” emphasizing that educators have a sacred duty to protect children, not harm them.
Abbass, who had pleaded not guilty to the charge, was convicted after the court reviewed witness testimonies, medical reports, and confessional evidence linking him to the crime.
Justice Adebiyi declared that such acts undermine the moral fabric of society and warned that the court would continue to impose the maximum penalty on offenders to deter future violations.
Child rights advocates have commended the judgment, describing it as a strong message against sexual violence targeting minors and a reminder that justice remains a vital safeguard for the vulnerable.
