The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN), Kaduna State Chapter, has condemned the recent U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Great Concern” due to alleged persecution of Christians, calling the move by the Trump administration “one-sided and unbalanced.”
In a statement, the Council’s Secretary, Engr. Hassan Abdul Rahman, argued that the U.S. failed to consider the complex ethnic, political, and economic factors contributing to insecurity in Nigeria. He emphasized that violence affects all Nigerians, including Muslims, and is not a targeted campaign against any single religious group.
“The Council is not happy with this development on allegations regarding Christian genocide in Nigeria. The U.S. should have sought a balanced perspective before reaching conclusions,” Abdul Rahman said.
He further criticized Western nations for selective attention, claiming they amplify incidents affecting Christians while ignoring violence against Muslims elsewhere, a bias he said fosters distrust and division.
Abdul Rahman also directed criticism at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), accusing it of promoting narratives that exacerbate religious tensions. He warned that continued instability would affect all religious communities in Nigeria.
The Council urged Nigerians to resist external interference and focus on national unity. “Let us not allow foreign lies to divide us. Through understanding and cooperation, Nigeria can overcome its challenges. We must resolve our differences without inviting outsiders to destroy the only nation we have,” he concluded.
