The National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary, to enhance cooperation in training, research exchange, and expertise in water engineering, flood management, and data processing.
The agreement was formalized at the Nigerian-Hungarian Water Forum, held in Abuja, with key officials from both nations in attendance.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, described the partnership as a significant milestone that will advance the training of Nigerian engineers and researchers, while improving the exchange of technical expertise in critical areas such as flood control, river basin management, and hydro-informatics.
According to Prof. Utsev, the collaboration aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in achieving water security, universal access to safe drinking water, and a nationwide sanitation revolution.
He noted that the Forum provides a unique opportunity to enhance Hungary’s visibility in Nigeria’s water sector while creating channels for public-private partnerships, direct investments, and joint ventures in modern technologies, including water treatment, irrigation systems, desalination, and digital water management.
“Nigeria is ready to work with Hungary in delivering sustainable solutions that will strengthen household water supply, industrial use, agricultural productivity, and environmental protection,” Prof. Utsev stated.
The Minister emphasized that the Forum represents a call to action to transform diplomatic goodwill into tangible outcomes. He reiterated the Federal Government’s readiness to provide a favorable policy environment, promote bilateral cooperation, and facilitate knowledge transfer and mutual capacity building. Prof. Utsev also assured of Nigeria’s commitment to encouraging credible Hungarian water companies to invest and operate within the Nigerian market through structured partnerships.
In his remarks, the Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Lorand Endreffy, commended Nigeria’s ongoing reforms in the water and sanitation sector, describing them as crucial steps toward achieving sustainable access to clean and safe water.
Ambassador Endreffy said the Water Forum offers a platform to share knowledge and research on flood management, as well as to support Nigeria’s efforts in addressing recurrent flooding, which is being worsened by climate change and population growth.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Prof. Joseph Utsev for their leadership and policy reforms aimed at improving water infrastructure and governance in the country.
The Nigerian-Hungarian Water Forum also featured paper presentations and technical discussions by experts from both nations, focusing on sustainable water engineering, climate resilience, and data-driven solutions for effective water management.
The signing of the MoU and the Forum proceedings were officially documented by Terhemen Oraduen, Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Honourable Minister, on November 4, 2025, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing water security, fostering bilateral cooperation, and promoting knowledge exchange between Nigeria and Hungary.
