The Cross River State Government has launched a decisive crackdown on illegal lottery and gaming operators, warning that businesses running without proper authorization will face severe penalties.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, the government expressed concern over the growing number of unregistered lottery and betting companies operating in the state without approval from the Cross River State Lotteries and Gaming Agency, which was established under Law No. 3 of 2024.
Authorities reaffirmed that only the state agency holds the power to license and regulate all gaming, betting, and lottery activities, in line with the Supreme Court judgment of November 22, 2024, which vested such regulatory powers in state governments.
The government urged all operators to comply immediately with registration and licensing requirements or risk prosecution and closure. It also advised media organizations to verify the status of gaming operators before airing or publishing their advertisements, warning that non-compliant outlets may be sanctioned.
While commending duly registered operators for their cooperation, the government called for continued partnership to promote a lawful, transparent, and responsible gaming environment in Cross River State.
