Abuja, November 5, 2025 — Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Henry Seriake Dickson, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to collaborate with U.S. President Donald Trump and other global allies to eradicate terrorism in Nigeria, describing the situation as a “direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.”
In a strongly worded statement issued in Abuja, Senator Dickson emphasized that Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions must be respected, but stressed that the nation must also welcome “collaborative action aimed at eliminating the murderous bands of terrorists” who have claimed thousands of lives over the past 15 years.
He highlighted that Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other jihadist factions such as Lakurawa and Wulowulo have devastated communities across the North-East, targeting both Christians and Muslims, destroying places of worship, and abducting school children — including the Chibok, Dapchi, and Buni Yadi victims.
“These terrorists continue to control territories, impose taxes on locals, and operate by their own rules — not by the laws of the Nigerian state or the Constitution. This is a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and should not be tolerated any further,”
Senator Dickson declared.
He described President Trump’s recent warning on anti-Christian violence in Nigeria as “a wake-up call to action,” adding that if the Nigerian government cannot decisively end terrorism, “it must collaborate with those who can help us flush out these terrorists.”
The senator also lamented the widespread insecurity across the Middle Belt and North-West, including Benue, Plateau, Southern Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba, Katsina, and Niger, where massacres and displacements have persisted. He accused successive administrations of failing to decisively address the killings, thereby fostering public mistrust and perceptions of state complicity.
Citing remarks by former Defence Minister General T.Y. Danjuma, Dickson recalled that concerns over ethno-religious bias in security appointments during the Buhari administration deepened the crisis.
“The killings have gone on for too long, and our security forces have been overwhelmed. We need help. No nation can confront terrorism in isolation,”
he stated.
The senator further urged President Tinubu to strengthen regional and diplomatic ties, particularly by appointing ambassadors without further delay to “enable our country maximise its diplomatic resources and options.”
He concluded with a solemn appeal:
“May God help Nigeria.”
