Yenagoa, November 5, 2025 — The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has urged the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps, Bayelsa Volunteers, and the State Vigilante Service to collaborate more closely with conventional security agencies to safeguard public infrastructure across communities in the state.

This resolution followed the adoption of a motion titled “An Urgent Call to Stop the Rampant Vandalization and Theft of Social Infrastructure, Especially Solar Lights in the State Provided by the Bayelsa State Government, NDDC, and Public-Spirited Individuals,” moved by Honourable Charles Daniel, representing Brass Constituency One, during Thursday’s plenary presided over by Speaker, Right Honourable Abraham Ingobere.

In his presentation, Honourable Daniel expressed deep concern over the rising cases of vandalization and theft of government facilities, including solar street lights, health centres, electrical installations, and public buildings, describing the trend as “disturbing and unacceptable.”

He called for immediate action by relevant authorities and community leaders to protect these investments, emphasizing that millions of naira have been lost to such destructive acts.

Supporting the motion, Deputy Speaker, Honourable Michael Ogbere, decried the increasing incidents of vandalism in both urban and rural areas and proposed the establishment of a special task force to combat the menace.

Also speaking, Honourable Tare Porri, member representing Ekeremor Constituency One, who seconded the motion, stressed that the destruction of public property is a criminal offense punishable by up to seven years imprisonment, urging law enforcement agencies to act decisively.

The House further directed Local Government Councils to engage traditional rulers, community development committees, and youth groups to strengthen surveillance and public awareness in their areas.

Lawmakers unanimously agreed that protecting public infrastructure is vital for sustainable development and community welfare, warning that continued neglect could undermine the state’s progress.
