Human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, has issued a scathing statement accusing the Nigerian government of operating a secret detention and torture facility within Wawa Military Barracks in Niger State — describing it as one of the gravest crimes against humanity committed under former President Muhammadu Buhari and allegedly continued under the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Sowore, the barracks has, for years, served as a clandestine holding site for hundreds of detainees, many of whom are reportedly accused — without credible evidence — of being members or sympathizers of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He alleged that federal judges are routinely transported to Wawa Barracks to conduct secret trials shielded from public scrutiny and media coverage.
“Detainees are denied access to lawyers and human rights observers, while their families, unaware of their fate, are left to believe they are either dead or disappeared,” Sowore said.
He described the ongoing situation as “state-sanctioned genocide,” arguing that it represents a systematic erasure of human lives through secrecy, prolonged detention, and psychological torture.
The activist called for the immediate and unconditional release of all persons being held at Wawa Barracks, urging that those accused of crimes be formally charged and tried in open court, in accordance with Nigerian and international law.
Sowore further appealed to the international community, human rights organizations, and global watchdogs to intervene and demand transparency from Nigerian authorities.
“The world must no longer look away. Justice delayed is not just denied; it is destroyed,” he declared.
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian government and the Nigerian Army have not issued any official response to the allegations.
If confirmed, the claims would represent a serious violation of constitutional rights, international human rights standards, and Nigeria’s obligations under global treaties prohibiting torture, enforced disappearance, and arbitrary detention.
