Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR (Rtd.), recently held a grand reception in Abuja celebrating his decades of military service. At the event, he reassured Nigerians that retirement has not diminished his sense of duty to the nation, stating, “Retirement has not diminished my sense of duty to the nation. True service to Nigeria goes beyond holding office.”
However, one cannot help but question the weight of these words considering the state of insecurity that has plagued the country during and after his tenure. Terrorism, banditry, and attacks on homes have spread across Nigeria, leaving many to wonder what exactly he means by “service” when millions continue to live in fear.
The reception, hosted by members of the 38th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), brought together senior military officers, friends, family, and well-wishers to honor his career. General Musa reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s peace and progress, adding, “I will continue to support our armed forces and contribute to peace and national progress in any way I can.”
While he paid tribute to serving and fallen troops, saying, “I remain proud of our troops who continue to stand firm in the face of challenges,” critics argue that during his time as CDS, security lapses were frequent, and terrorism often went unchecked.
Musa stressed that true leadership is rooted in values, not titles, claiming, “Leadership is not about titles or ranks; it is about service, compassion, and integrity.” Yet, for many Nigerians living under constant threat, these words appear disconnected from the harsh realities on the ground.
He also expressed gratitude to his course mates, saying, “Our bond as course mates is one of brotherhood and shared commitment to national service,” and concluded with a call for unity, adding, “Nigeria will continue to thrive when we all play our part, whether in uniform or out of it, to make our nation safer and stronger.”
Despite the celebratory tone of the event, observers are left questioning how Musa’s career as Chief of Defence Staff reconciles with the continuing insecurity that has afflicted the nation—a situation that raises doubts about whether his version of “service” truly translated into meaningful protection for Nigerians.
