The people of Faruruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State are living in fear following renewed bandit attacks, despite the presence of heavy military and security operatives in the area.
According to the community chairman, Alhaji Yahya Bagobiri, bandits on motorcycles invaded Yan Kwada village on Sunday night, abducting five nursing mothers and carting away about 50 cows and several other domestic animals.
The incident, which occurred around 9 p.m., has thrown the entire community into panic, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes in search of safety.
Bagobiri lamented that attacks have continued almost daily for the past three weeks, even after the deployment of soldiers and other security agencies to the area. He expressed frustration that despite receiving intelligence of the attackers’ movements, security operatives allegedly failed to act.
“Even yesterday, we got reports that the bandits were approaching and alerted the security agents, but nothing was done. They came around 9 p.m., raided houses, and took away the nursing mothers,” he said.
The community leader added that one of the abducted women later escaped, leaving four nursing mothers still in captivity. Shockingly, the attackers abandoned the babies of the kidnapped women, leaving the infants crying helplessly through the night.
Bagobiri called on President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and other top security officials to intensify efforts to end the repeated assaults on rural communities.
“We appreciate the government’s initial response by deploying military personnel, but we urge that more armed officers be stationed in the area to strengthen security and restore peace,” he added.
It was recalled that two weeks ago, the military engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, killing 19 of them, but also losing two soldiers and one vigilante in the encounter.
Residents of Faruruwa now live in fear as the attacks persist, raising questions about the effectiveness of ongoing security operations in rural Kano communities.
