A disturbing twist has emerged in Enugu State following revelations that a woman, identified as Chisom Okonkwo, allegedly fabricated claims that her husband, Ozioma Okonkwo, defiled their two daughters — accusations that medical evidence has now proven to be false.

The case, now before the Magistrate Court of Enugu State, is titled Commissioner of Police vs. Chisom Okonkwo (F), age 29 years, and was filed under Charge No. EMC/…./2025 in the Enugu Magisterial District.

According to court documents, the police charged Mrs. Okonkwo with defamation of character and giving false information to law enforcement officers. The charge sheet alleges that in August 2024, along Adoration Junction, opposite Dan-Legal Hotel, Emene, Enugu, the accused publicly shouted that her husband had defiled their two daughters — an allegation that, according to investigators, was entirely untrue.

The document notes that the outburst “exposed him to hatred, contempt, ridicule, and damaged his reputation,” which constitutes an offence under Section 323, punishable by Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.

Further, the police allege that on October 27, 2025, Mrs. Okonkwo visited the State Intelligence Department (SID) in Enugu, where she reportedly gave “false information” to detectives, insisting her husband had sexually assaulted their daughters. The charge states that she “knew the information to be false and untrue even when the police officers acted based on it,” an offence punishable under Section 154(1)(a)&(b) of the same Criminal Code.

Emerging reports have since revealed that medical examinations conducted on the two children confirmed they had not been defiled, contradicting the mother’s claims. Investigators concluded that the allegations were fabricated, though the motive behind her false accusation remains unclear.

With these findings, the Enugu State Police Command charged Mrs. Okonkwo to court for defamation and giving false information. The charge sheet, however, shows that details such as the date of arraignment, presiding magistrate, and defence counsel are yet to be filled, suggesting that the case is still in its preliminary stages.

The development has sparked public debate over the dangers of false accusations and their impact on both families and the justice system. Legal observers note that if convicted, the accused could face penalties under the relevant sections of the Enugu State Criminal Code.
