Abuja, Nigeria — Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has raised alarm over the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria, warning that bandits and terrorists now possess more sophisticated weapons and resources than the Nigerian military.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Lawal said the rising capacity of armed groups to launch coordinated and deadly attacks against civilians and security forces shows that the country’s security architecture is losing ground.

> “The resources at their disposal are so enormous that most of the time, they are better armed than the soldiers,” Lawal stated.

He revealed that the insurgents’ access to heavy funding and logistics has made them increasingly formidable, adding that they have begun using advanced technologies such as drones to strike military bases.

> “What they are yet to acquire now are helicopters and bombs, but we already hear of them using drones,” he added.

Lawal, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, questioned how untrained militants could gain access to such high-level weaponry and expertise without external support. He insinuated that the operations of these groups might be backed by powerful and influential sponsors.

> “If it’s just a primitive, uneducated, bush-living Fulani man, how does he get the knowledge? Somebody somewhere must be funding them,” he queried.

He further criticized the silence of some community and religious leaders who fail to condemn acts of violence perpetrated by members of their groups, stressing that such silence encourages impunity.

> “If people don’t call out their own when they commit violence, then they share responsibility,” Lawal said.

Lawal’s comments come amid an escalating wave of kidnappings, mass killings, and attacks on security formations across the country — developments that have deepened fears that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism is losing momentum.

The former SGF’s warning adds to growing public concern that the country’s security agencies are under-equipped, underfunded, and overstretched — while non-state actors continue to expand their firepower and influence unchecked.
