The Department of State Services (DSS) has re-arrested Abdulazeez Obadaki, a notorious Ansaru militant believed to be the mastermind of the 2012 Deeper Life Bible Church mass shooting in Okene, Kogi State, which claimed 19 lives.

Obadaki, also known as “Bomboy,” had previously escaped custody during a jailbreak at the Kuje Custodial Centre in July 2022, after being transferred from Kabba Custodial Centre in June of the same year. Security sources say he allegedly planned the jailbreak, allowing him to evade authorities for over three years.

The recapture was achieved through a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation by DSS operatives, who have been intensifying counter-terrorism and anti-kidnapping efforts across the country. Obadaki is also linked to a violent assault on five commercial banks in Uromi, Edo State, highlighting the broader threat he posed beyond terror attacks.

This arrest marks a significant milestone for Nigerian security agencies, reflecting improved intelligence gathering and operational precision. Analysts say it also sends a strong message to other fugitives that the government remains committed to bringing high-profile terrorists to justice.

A security source told THISDAY:

“After more than three years on the run, DSS operatives, acting on a well-coordinated intelligence operation, recaptured the fugitive on Friday morning.”

Obadaki is currently in DSS custody and is expected to face prosecution for his role in both the 2012 church massacre and other criminal activities. Authorities continue to investigate potential networks linked to him and are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
