A magistrate court in Dutse, Jigawa State, has remanded Abba Mu’azu Abiyos in prison until 24 November 2025, when his trial will begin. The case stems from his alleged criticism of Abba Ya’u, chairman of Roni Local Government Area.

All attempts to secure bail for Abiyos were reportedly rejected, and he has been in detention since 12 November 2025.

Observers note that this case reflects a pattern of impunity in which the police and judiciary are sometimes perceived as being used to punish young Nigerians for speaking out against authorities. As one human rights advocate explained: “Subjecting critical voices to intimidation and arbitrary arrests for speaking out is unlawful.

Social media users in Nigeria are increasingly facing intimidation for commenting on social and political matters. Some individuals have reported threats of arrest and even attacks due to their online activity.

Amnesty International Nigeria warn that such practices constitute an unacceptable violation of human rights. “Using repressive tactics to control what Nigerians do on social media is an unacceptable violation of human rights. This must end,” said one rights monitor.

The case has reignited debate on freedom of expression and the need to protect citizens, particularly youth, who voice opinions on political and social issues.
