In Kebbi State, Nigeria, good news emerged as one of the girls kidnapped from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga has managed to escape and is now safe. The school principal confirmed the escape to the Associated Press.

The attack happened before dawn on Monday when armed men broke into the school, climbed over the fence, and engaged police in gunfire. During the chaos, the gunmen seized multiple students and tragically killed a staff member. This kidnapping is part of a troubling pattern of mass abductions that have become common in northwestern Nigeria.

Interestingly, another student also escaped immediately after the attack, avoiding capture as the armed bandits fled with the remaining girls. Security forces, along with hunters familiar with the dense forests surrounding Maga, have intensified their search efforts, combing areas often used as hideouts by bandit gangs.

While no group has claimed responsibility, authorities and experts believe that armed bandits—many of whom are former herders—are behind these attacks. They target schools, travelers, and remote communities to demand ransom, taking advantage of worsening conflicts over resources.

A video verified by the Associated Press shows the two girls who escaped, appearing to be in their early teens. They sit quietly with relatives and villagers, their faces covered with hijabs, as they process the trauma of the ordeal.

This ongoing wave of kidnappings raises a painful and urgent question: how long will it take before children in northern Nigeria can learn and grow without living in fear?
