The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, has announced plans by the Nigerian Army to recruit and train 24,000 new soldiers as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen military operations across the country.
Shuaibu revealed this on Wednesday during an operational visit to the 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna, where he met with frontline commanders and assessed ongoing security operations in the region.
According to him, the large-scale recruitment drive is a strategic response to the nation’s evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, violent crime, and emerging asymmetric threats.
He explained that increasing the number of trained personnel will significantly improve the army’s capacity to hold ground, dominate difficult terrains, and respond swiftly to threats in both urban and remote communities.
Shuaibu emphasized that the upcoming recruitment will prioritise competence, physical fitness, discipline, and national commitment, noting that the army is determined to build a more agile and combat-ready force.
The COAS also commended troops under 1 Division for their resilience and sacrifices in ongoing operations, assuring them of continued support, improved welfare, and better operational tools.
He reiterated the army’s resolve to “stay ahead of adversaries” and safeguard every corner of the country as part of its constitutional mandate.
