The leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been found guilty of engaging in terrorism by a Federal High Court in Abuja. The court’s judgment was delivered on Thursday during Kanu’s ongoing terrorism trial.
Justice James Omotosho, the presiding judge, convicted Kanu on two of the seven charges brought against him by the federal government. The court has now begun reviewing the third charge.
The judge explained that Kanu’s threats of violence, including speeches and broadcasts, as well as the sit-at-home orders declared in the South-East states, were acts of terrorism. The court found that Kanu’s actions and words contributed to unrest and violence in the region.
This ruling is seen as a major step in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and violence linked to separatist activities. The case is still ongoing, as the court continues to review the remaining charges against Kanu.
This development highlights the government’s determination to crack down on activities that threaten peace and security in Nigeria.
