The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking. On November 16, 2025, NDLEA officers intercepted a vessel, MV Nord Bosporus, arriving at Lagos’ Apapa port from Santos, Brazil, carrying 20 kilograms of cocaine hidden under its cargo.
The drug was discovered during a routine inspection of the ship, which was making its first visit to Nigeria and Africa. Previously, the vessel mainly transported coal between Colombia and Brazil. The ship’s captain, Quino Eugene Corpus, and 19 other crew members— all Filipinos—were detained for investigation.
The NDLEA quickly applied for the detention of the vessel and the crew, and a court in Lagos granted a 14-day detention order. This operation shows Nigeria’s increased capacity to prevent illegal drug entry through its borders and ports.
This isn’t the first time Nigeria has intercepted drug shipments from South America. In 2021, NDLEA arrested 10 Thai sailors and seized 32.9 kilograms of cocaine on another vessel, MV Chayanee Naree, also arriving from Brazil. That case resulted in convictions and a $4.3 million fine in May 2025.
Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, NDLEA Chairman, praised the officers at the Apapa Port for their vigilance and professionalism. He emphasized that Nigeria is determined to clamp down on drug traffickers and will not allow the country to be used as a base for illegal drug activities.
Marwa warned international drug cartels and those within Nigeria helping them that Nigeria will operate with zero-tolerance. The government is strengthening security at all entry points, especially seaports, and working closely with international partners to stay ahead of traffickers.
He also warned Nigerians involved in aiding drug traffickers that they are betraying their country’s future and will face harsh penalties, including long prison sentences and confiscation of assets.
This bold move by the NDLEA underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fighting drug crimes and protecting its citizens. The fight continues, and Nigeria remains vigilant against those seeking to use its borders for illegal activities.
