The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, has confirmed that 227 people were abducted in the early-morning attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area.
According to CAN, the victims include students, teachers, and other staff members who were taken when armed bandits stormed the school premises between 2am and 3am on Friday.
Initial reports had indicated uncertainty over the number of missing persons, but CAN officials said a headcount conducted by community and church leaders showed that a total of 227 individuals were seized during the coordinated assault.
The attack has deepened fear and tensions in the state, coming amid repeated incidents of school-related abductions in parts of northern Nigeria. Security agencies have not yet released an official statement on the operation or ongoing rescue efforts.
CAN has called on the federal and state governments to act urgently to secure the release of the abductees and strengthen protections for schools across Niger State.
