A fresh wave of tension has emerged following claims by rights activist Omoyele Sowore that the Federal Government has covertly transferred detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to a correctional facility in Sokoto State—an allegation now sparking public debate about transparency and detainee safety.
According to Sowore, Kanu was secretly moved earlier today to what he described as a “notorious” northern prison, far from his support base. He alleges that authorities deliberately avoided transferring Kanu to Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja because “he would become a king” among supporters, with the belief that many Igbo sympathisers would turn the centre into a pilgrimage ground.
Sowore claims the transfer is part of a broader strategy to isolate Kanu and weaken the morale of his followers. He further accused the government of deploying a psychological tactic by pushing narratives of “renewed hope” around Kanu’s case to keep the public calm while carrying out what he describes as a darker agenda.
The activist insists the government has no intention of releasing the IPOB leader, not even for political reasons. He also pointed fingers at politicians from Kanu’s own region, alleging they are among those most determined to silence him permanently due to his influence and grassroots appeal.
Sowore linked these alleged actions to efforts to frustrate the #FreeNnamdiKanuNOW movement, warning citizens to remain alert and not be misled by political messaging.
While the claims have generated widespread reactions online, there has been no official response from the Federal Government or the Nigerian Correctional Service to confirm or refute the alleged transfer.
The development is expected to fuel further calls for transparency regarding Kanu’s detention and trial, especially as concerns over his welfare continue to grow.
