The Nigerian Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of 41 Federal Unity Colleges across several regions, including the North-West, North-East, North-Central, and parts of the South. This decision comes amid rising security threats and recent attacks on schools in various states.
The closure was announced through a circular from the Federal Ministry of Education, and it was approved by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. In the circular, the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, instructed the principals of these schools to shut down operations immediately.
The government listed all 41 affected schools, citing recent incidents of attacks and student abductions as the main reasons for the closure. Reports of renewed violence and abductions in some states have raised serious concerns about the safety of students and staff.
The government stated that the temporary closure is necessary to prevent any further security breaches and to protect lives. As of now, no date has been announced for when the schools will reopen.
This decision highlights the increasing security challenges Nigeria faces, especially in safeguarding its educational institutions.
