President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country, directing that they return to core policing duties as insecurity continues to spread across Nigeria.

The decision, announced after a high-level security meeting on Sunday in Abuja, marks a major shift in the deployment of security personnel. According to the directive, VIPs who still require escorts must now obtain “well-armed personnel” from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of the police.

The move follows growing concerns over the shortage of police presence in many communities, especially remote areas where residents remain vulnerable to attacks, kidnappings and criminal gangs. Despite rising insecurity, thousands of police officers are currently assigned to private individuals, politicians and wealthy elites, leaving police stations understaffed.

To strengthen frontline security, President Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers, alongside an ongoing collaboration with state governments to upgrade training facilities nationwide.

Sunday’s meeting was attended by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.

The directive, conveyed through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, signals a renewed push by the Presidency to return the Nigeria Police Force to its primary mission — protecting lives and property across the country.
