Kebbi State Government, in partnership with the Saudi-based World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) and the Nasara Foundation, has kicked off a five-day free eye medical outreach aimed at providing care to 5,000 residents across all 21 Local Government Areas.

The initiative, which includes 1,000 surgeries, treatment for 3,000 patients, and distribution of 1,000 eye glasses, seeks to address eye-related health challenges and improve the quality of life for vulnerable citizens. All participants are being provided with three meals daily during the programme.

Speaking after inspecting the outreach at the Medical Center in Kalgo, Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Isma’il Augie, expressed satisfaction with the progress, describing the initiative as a “special outreach designed to deliver meaningful support to thousands of residents.”

WAMY’s Country Director, Dr. Hisham Muhammad, revealed that over 500 patients were attended to on the first day, with 54 surgeries performed, 100 glasses issued, and medication supplied to 336 patients. The NGO, which operates under the United Nations, aims to conduct 1,000 surgeries, issue 600 glasses, and provide medications to over 2,000 patients by the end of the programme.

Engr. Imam Imran Usman, Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs, praised Governor Nasir Idris for supporting the initiative, emphasizing that the outreach would leave a lasting impact on beneficiaries.

Residents have lauded the programme as life-changing. Malam Bello Halidu, who underwent surgery, said, “I never expected to regain my sight but can now see clearly after the operation. I offer prayers for Governor Idris and all those who supported the initiative.” Maryam Hamisu, a recipient of eye glasses, thanked God and the organisers for bringing the outreach to Kebbi State.

The collaborative effort highlights the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare access and the wellbeing of its citizens, while demonstrating the impact of partnerships with international NGOs in delivering essential services.
