Senator Orji Kalu, who represents Abia North, has claimed that the recent increase in violence and insecurity across Nigeria is caused by politicians. He made this accusation during a TV programme called ‘Sunday Politics’ on Channels Television.
Kalu explained that the recent kidnappings, school closures, and violent attacks follow a pattern that often happens before elections. He recalled similar tensions during the time of former President Goodluck Jonathan, suggesting that current events are linked to political plans for the 2027 elections.
The senator further alleged that some political actors are recruiting mercenaries—hired fighters—to cause unrest and destabilize the country. He said that such violence is often used as a tool by politicians to put pressure on the government, especially during election periods.
Kalu stated, “When you have an election, people try to pressurize the government in power for all kinds of things to start happening.” He added that similar issues occurred during President Jonathan’s time, with efforts to pressure the administration.
The senator also accused some members of the international community and local individuals of orchestrating terrorists and bandits to cause chaos and destabilize Nigeria’s government. He emphasized that the violence is politically motivated and has been ongoing for months.
Kalu mentioned that Nigeria had remained relatively quiet until then-U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about the killings in Nigeria, which he believes drew international attention to the crisis.
He claimed that these acts of violence are driven by mercenaries—hired fighters—who are paid by politicians to create chaos. According to him, these mercenaries are bought by individuals aiming to weaken Nigeria’s government.
Despite these challenges, Kalu praised the current president, saying he has shown he is capable of handling the situation and working to restore peace and stability in Nigeria.
