The Nigerian federal government has announced that the first 47-kilometer section of the new Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway will be ready for public use by December 2025. This new highway is expected to improve transportation and boost economic activities along Nigeria’s southern coast.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, during an inspection of the ongoing construction on Sunday. He said that once the entire highway is completed, it will greatly reduce travel time between important coastal cities and make it easier to move goods and people across the region.

The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway is a major infrastructure project designed to connect Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, and Cross River States, eventually reaching Calabar in Cross River State. The highway will work alongside existing roads, help reduce traffic jams, and promote economic growth in the region.

Minister Umahi expressed satisfaction with the progress so far and assured Nigerians that the project is on schedule. He also emphasized that safety standards and modern engineering techniques are being strictly followed during construction.

Officials from the Ministry of Works, contractors, and other stakeholders accompanied the minister during the inspection. They reviewed key parts of the road, including drainage systems, bridges, and interchanges.

The government also promised that the remaining phases of the highway will be completed smoothly, with the full stretch from Lagos to Calabar expected to be operational within the next few years.
