The United Kingdom will begin strict enforcement of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement starting 25 February 2026, the UK Home Office has announced.

Under the new rule, visitors from 85 non-visa countries will be required to obtain digital permission in advance before traveling to the UK. Failure to secure an ETA will bar travelers from boarding flights or ferries to the country.

The ETA system is part of the UK government’s efforts to strengthen border security, streamline immigration checks, and improve traveler screening. While travelers from non-visa countries previously did not require prior authorisation, the digital ETA will now act as a mandatory clearance for entry.

Authorities have urged prospective visitors to apply early to avoid travel disruptions, emphasizing that airlines and ferry operators will enforce compliance starting from the February 2026 deadline.

The move marks a significant tightening of UK border controls for millions of short-term travelers and holidaymakers from countries that traditionally enjoyed visa-free access.
