Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff, a prominent activist from Northern Nigeria, continues to face trial after publicly criticizing banditry and highlighting alleged failures in governance by Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State. Her activism, which focused on security challenges and government accountability, has reportedly made her a target for intimidation.
According to sources close to the matter, Shariff was abducted twice by armed assailants allegedly sponsored by political interests. During these incidents, she was beaten and sustained severe injuries. Despite these threats to her life, she has persisted in her advocacy work, calling attention to insecurity and systemic shortcomings in the state.
In addition to the physical attacks, it has been reported that prominent social media influencers in the Northern region were allegedly paid to run coordinated smear campaigns against her, further undermining her reputation and attempting to silence her voice.
Human rights observers and civil society organizations have raised concerns about the suppression of freedom of expression and the intimidation of activists in the region. They argue that the treatment of Shariff reflects a worrying trend where outspoken critics of political leaders and security policies are subjected to harassment, abduction, and defamation campaigns.
Shariff’s ongoing trial has drawn attention from both local and international advocacy groups, who are calling for due process, protection of human rights, and the safety of activists in Northern Nigeria.
