The trial of Willie Obiano, the former governor of Anambra State, has been put on hold indefinitely by a Federal High Court in Abuja. This means the case is not scheduled to resume anytime soon.
The postponement came after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting Obiano, requested the court to adjourn the case without setting a new date. The prosecution's lawyer, Mr. S.O. Obila, told the court that it was the first time the case was before the current judge, Justice Mohammed Umar.
Obila explained that he was instructed by the lead prosecutor, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, to seek an indefinite delay until the previous judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, who was handling the case, returns to conclude it.
Obiano’s lawyer, Mr. Onyeachi Ikpeazu, SAN, did not oppose the request, citing difficulties in securing nine witnesses who had previously testified in the case.
Justice Umar agreed and adjourned the trial "sine die," a legal term meaning "without a fixed date," effectively stopping the case for now.
Previously, in July, SaharaReporters reported that the trial had been scheduled to resume on November 25, involving allegations of money laundering of N4 billion.
The case was transferred to Justice Umar recently, after he took over the trial and handled other cases. The initial hearing was scheduled for May 26 but was postponed to July 24 for mention, as Justice Umar was not available on the original date.
