Human rights activist and presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing the agency of trying to play the role of “judge and benefactor” despite its history of rights abuses.

Sowore, in a strongly worded statement, said the DSS has no moral justification to award compensation to victims when it has allegedly carried out illegal detentions, enforced disappearances, and other acts that violate the fundamental rights of Nigerians.

According to him, what victims truly deserve is justice, accountability, and full restitution—not token payments from the same institution accused of oppressing them.

He insisted that before any compensation is discussed, the DSS must publicly reveal all secret detention locations, disclose where citizens subjected to extraordinary rendition were taken, and name officials responsible for these abuses, whether still serving or retired. He also called for independent verification by human rights bodies such as Amnesty International.

Sowore demanded that all “dark sites” operated by the DSS be exposed and that everyone being held illegally should be released unconditionally.

He concluded that until the agency embraces full transparency and accountability, it will remain, in his words, a “despicable organisation sustained by impunity and secrecy.”
