The Dangote Group has announced a major partnership with global technology company Honeywell to expand the capacity of the Dangote Refinery to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2028—more than double its current output of 650,000 bpd.
The collaboration will see Honeywell supply advanced refinery technology and automation systems critical to the multi-year expansion project. According to Dangote, the upgrade is designed to significantly strengthen Africa’s energy independence, slash Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel, and position the refinery as a major exporter of refined petroleum products.
Industry analysts say the project could be transformative for Nigeria’s economy, predicting large-scale job creation, increased foreign exchange earnings, and a more stable fuel supply across West Africa.
The expansion, set to begin in phases starting in 2025, is expected to propel the Dangote Refinery into the league of the world’s largest refining facilities upon completion.
The development has been widely welcomed as a strategic move to reshape the energy landscape in Nigeria and the wider region.
