Tension has gripped residents of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the abduction of a 16-year-old boy and six girls from Gidan-Bijimi, a community in Kawu Ward.
The victims were reportedly taken in the early hours of Wednesday after armed men invaded the village, shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee for safety.
It was alledged that the attackers operated for several minutes without resistance before whisking the children away.
Gidan-Bijimi, a small farming settlement, lies close to the boundary between the FCT and Kaduna State, sharing a border with Marke village—an area that has suffered repeated bandit incursions in recent years. Residents say the attackers likely exploited the porous nature of the FCT–Kaduna border, which has increasingly become a route for kidnappers targeting rural communities.
A local resident who asked not to be named said the kidnappers moved “straight to specific houses,” suggesting prior knowledge of the families. “They took the boy and the girls without any struggle. People were too scared to confront them because they were heavily armed,” he said.
The latest attack has heightened security concerns in Bwari Area Council, which has recorded a series of kidnappings in the past year, especially in communities situated near the forests that stretch into Kaduna.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but security sources said joint operations involving police and local vigilante groups had begun combing the surrounding forests in search of the victims.
Residents have appealed to the FCT Administration and federal security agencies to intensify patrols, improve response time, and strengthen intelligence gathering in order to curb the growing threat of banditry along the FCT’s border corridors.
