The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Federal Government to activate all diplomatic channels to ensure the quick and safe return of Nigeria’s former President, H.E. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, from Guinea-Bissau, which is currently facing a political crisis.
This appeal was made during a special session of the House, where lawmakers adopted a Matter of Urgent Public Importance. The motion was moved by the House Majority Leader, Rt. Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, who informed members that former President Jonathan was in Guinea-Bissau as the Head of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), participating in an international observer mission.
Rt. Hon. Ihonvbere emphasized that the Nigerian government is aware of the situation and is doing everything possible to bring him back safely and swiftly. He urged the government not to relent in its efforts and to use all diplomatic means available, describing Jonathan as a “true democrat” who deserves to be brought home without delay.
The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chinda, and was unanimously approved by all members present.
Reports indicate that former President Jonathan, along with several other high-ranking Nigerians, is stranded in Guinea-Bissau following a military takeover on Wednesday that grounded all flights and restricted movement in and out of the country.
The crisis erupted just before Guinea-Bissau was set to announce the results of a highly contested presidential election held on Sunday.
The House reaffirmed that protecting the lives of Nigerian citizens both at home and abroad remains a top national priority and called on the Executive Branch to act immediately to secure the safe return of Jonathan and other Nigerians stranded in Guinea-Bissau.
