In a continued effort to foster inclusive governance and strengthen connections with citizens, the Lagos State Government recently held the latest edition of the Mother and Infant Child Development Programme (MICHD) at the Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu Primary Health Centre in Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area. The programme, coordinated through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, is designed to engage directly with pregnant women—a particularly vulnerable and delicate segment of society—ensuring their health, wellbeing, and voices are integrated into the state’s developmental agenda.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, highlighted that MICHD serves as a practical demonstration of the government’s commitment to listening, connecting, and responding to citizens’ needs. She explained that citizen engagement in Lagos State extends beyond policy dialogues or town hall meetings, encompassing initiatives that directly impact the daily lives and welfare of residents. According to her, MICHD effectively creates a bridge between the government and households, making sure that no mother or child is overlooked in the state’s developmental plans.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District I, Dr. Sola Pitan, commended the state government for its sustained investment in health infrastructure and personnel. He emphasized that these efforts are aimed at supporting expectant mothers and improving maternal outcomes, urging pregnant women to utilize public health centres for professional antenatal care and safe delivery services.
The Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu, also expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for bringing the programme to the community. He underscored that initiatives like MICHD provide an opportunity for both state and local governments to review achievements, assess ongoing needs, and plan for future interventions, thereby ensuring that residents continue to enjoy the benefits of effective and responsive governance.
The programme’s highlight was the State Engagement Session, which offered pregnant women the opportunity to participate in open dialogue, learn about ongoing government programmes, share personal experiences, and express their specific needs directly to government representatives. This session underscored the state’s commitment to citizen-centered governance, where feedback from residents helps shape policy and programmatic interventions.
Dignitaries from Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, health workers from various public health centres under Lagos State Health District I, and management staff of the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement attended the event, reinforcing the collaborative effort between government institutions and local communities in driving inclusive development.
Through the MICHD programme, the Lagos State Government continues to demonstrate its dedication to grassroots engagement, maternal wellbeing, and ensuring that the benefits of governance reach every resident, particularly those in vulnerable segments of society.
