Communities in Niger State have been thrown into grief and anger after a 13-year-old girl, Hasiya A. Bawa, was raped by three armed bandits in Kudodo village, Golkogo ward of Shiroro Local Government Area. The young girl was returning from the market with her older brother when the attackers ambushed them. She is currently hospitalized.
The assault has intensified growing fears in the Lakpma axis, where residents say bandit attacks have surged again despite ongoing security efforts. Locals describe the situation as “alarming” and “beyond what rural communities can bear.”
Shiroro has become one of the state’s hardest-hit areas in the wider wave of banditry plaguing northern Nigeria. In recent weeks:
Twenty-four farmers — including pregnant women — were abducted in Palaita community.
Vigilantes and residents have been attacked and killed in multiple villages.
More than 600 residents have been displaced following repeated invasions.
Security analysts note that these incidents are part of an expanding pattern of rural violence driven by porous borders, inadequate security presence, and deepening economic hardship that criminal groups continue to exploit.
Despite military operations and community policing initiatives, residents say the attacks have only become more frequent and more brutal. Many fear that without stronger and sustained intervention, communities in Shiroro and beyond will remain dangerously exposed.
