A terrifying wave of violence swept through the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State on Wednesday when gunmen ambushed a convoy linked to former Governor and ex-Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, killing a woman who was recording the incident on her phone.
The attack, described by eyewitnesses as sudden and brutal, unfolded in broad daylight as the convoy approached the busy stretch of road. According to Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s former spokesperson, the former minister was not in the convoy at the time of the ambush — a detail that may have prevented an even deadlier incident.
The assailants, reportedly dressed in a mix of police and military uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle, catching its occupants off guard. In the chaos, a yet-to-be-identified woman who had begun filming the unfolding attack was shot dead instantly. Her phone reportedly fell beside her as she slumped to the ground.
A police officer in the convoy’s lead vehicle was also shot, and the attackers seized his rifle and uniform before speeding away. The pilot car was left riddled with bullet holes as the gunmen unleashed a barrage of gunfire before fleeing the scene.
The identity of the woman killed remains unknown, but her death has sparked widespread shock, with many describing it as another tragic reminder of the dangers faced by civilians simply going about their daily lives.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, as security operatives intensify efforts to track down the attackers and uncover their motives. Meanwhile, Ngige has reportedly expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and injuries sustained, offering condolences to the victim’s family.
The shocking incident adds to mounting security concerns in Anambra State, where criminal groups have increasingly targeted both ordinary citizens and high-profile individuals in recent months.
