Residents of Kabunga community in Kware Local Government Area of Sokoto State narrowly escaped tragedy on Thursday night after armed bandits invaded the area, injuring one resident and rustling a large number of cattle.
According to local sources, the attackers struck under the cover of darkness, forcing villagers to flee for safety while they carted away livestock. The assault added to growing concerns over persistent banditry threatening rural communities in the state.
In a swift response, community vigilantes mobilised and pursued the fleeing bandits, tracking them through the Maikujera, Angamba, and Gidan Buwai axis. A brief but intense exchange followed, during which two of the attackers were reportedly killed.
The operation proved successful as all stolen cattle were recovered and returned to the community. No additional civilian casualties were recorded.
Community members have praised the vigilantes for their decisive response, calling their actions a demonstration of local resilience in the face of worsening insecurity.
The incident once again highlights the fragile security situation in parts of Sokoto State, where rural communities increasingly rely on self-organised defence groups to repel armed threats.
