Thirty-seven abducted residents of Yan Ganjar, Alhazawa and Karma communities in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State regained freedom on Monday after ongoing dialogue between local authorities and armed bandits. The abductees were formally received by the Chairman of Bakori LGA, Hon. Abubakar Barde, and the State Assembly Member representing the area, Hon. Abdulrahman Kandarawa.

Families across the communities welcomed the return of their loved ones with deep relief. But the homecoming also reignited frustration among residents who say the government’s engagement with criminal groups raises more questions than answers.

While officials describe the talks as a necessary step to secure immediate safety, some locals accuse authorities of “romancing with bandits” under the banner of a peace deal. Critics fear that negotiating with armed groups may embolden them and undermine long-term security.

The tension comes as the state governor continues a tour of local government areas, where residents are demanding clarity. Many are urging the government to explain its official position on peace deals, outline the sustainability of dialogue with criminal elements, and present a transparent long-term security strategy.

For now, the return of the 37 residents brings temporary relief—but many in Bakori say the real fight is for a solution that keeps communities safe without strengthening the very groups endangering them.
