Katsina State — In a significant development amid the growing wave of kidnappings in northern Nigeria, 37 individuals abducted by a notorious forest gang have been released in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State. The victims, predominantly men and women from rural communities, were seized during recent attacks that have terrorized the Bakori–Funtua axis.

The release, which took place on Wednesday, was confirmed by local sources who described the event as a relief for families and the wider community. While details of the negotiations leading to the release remain unclear, residents say the bandit leader identified as Isiya Kwashen Garwa allowed the captives to go free after several days in captivity.

A community member expressed gratitude for the safe return of the victims while appealing for the liberation of others still held by criminal gangs. “May Allah rescue our remaining brothers and sisters in the hands of these criminals and bring an end to their reign and those sponsoring them,” he prayed.

Security analysts note that the Bakori–Funtua corridor has witnessed a marked increase in banditry and kidnappings over the past months, with forest gangs exploiting the area’s rugged terrain and limited security presence to target vulnerable communities. According to local officials, the abductions not only disrupt daily life but also threaten socio-economic activities, as residents live in constant fear of attacks while traveling, farming, or conducting business.

In response to the surge in kidnappings, security agencies in Katsina State have intensified patrols and mounted intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling bandit networks. State authorities have urged communities to cooperate with security personnel and report suspicious activities promptly to prevent future abductions.

While the release of the 37 victims brings temporary relief, residents warn that the menace of banditry remains a serious challenge requiring sustained government intervention, robust security measures, and community engagement. For many families in Bakori and surrounding areas, the incident underscores the fragility of safety in northern Nigeria and the urgent need for coordinated action to protect lives and livelihoods.
