Akwa Ibom State has entered a new era of firm public order enforcement as Governor Umo Eno issued one of his strongest directives yet: any masquerade found parading on the streets will be arrested and prosecuted. The statement, delivered with unmistakable clarity, signals the government’s determination to curb the growing trend of unruly cultural displays spilling onto public roads and disrupting everyday life.

In recent months, some communities in the state have raised concerns over masquerades who, beyond traditional festivities, have been associated with harassment, extortion, and obstruction of movement. These incidents, according to residents, often leave people—especially traders, commuters, and schoolchildren—feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhoods.

Governor Eno, known for his emphasis on peace, hospitality, and orderly conduct, said the state would no longer tolerate such breaches of public safety. He explained that Akwa Ibom respects culture and tradition, but these cultural expressions must operate within the boundaries of the law. No festival or masquerade outing, he stressed, should take place without formal approval and the guidance of traditional authorities who understand their purpose and limits.

“Culture should unite and uplift our people, not terrorize or inconvenience them,” the governor emphasized, instructing security agencies to enforce the directive strictly and decisively. Police and other enforcement units have since been placed on alert to ensure that any unauthorized masquerade appearance is met with immediate action.

The governor also appealed to village heads, clan leaders, and custodians of tradition to rein in their youths and ensure cultural rites remain within designated areas. Responsible cultural expression, he noted, strengthens identity—while recklessness threatens community harmony.

As the state moves to implement the order, residents are watching closely. For some, it’s a long-awaited step toward restoring sanity on major roads; for others, a reminder that even cherished traditions must evolve in a modern society guided by law and order.
