The Nasarawa State Police Command has rescued 39 foreign nationals, including 32 males and seven females, from an alleged human trafficking operation in the Orange Market area of Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area.

The victims, mostly from Mali, with one female from Ivory Coast, were discovered confined in a bungalow after a report was lodged by Habi Baraji, a Malian national who speaks only French and Arabic. Baraji told authorities he was lured to Nigeria about a week ago by another Malian, Abdullahi Berter, who promised him a job opportunity in France.

Upon arrival, Baraji realized he had been deceived, as Berter allegedly pressured him to bring more people from Mali into Nigeria for an undisclosed purpose. He also suspected that Berter was holding “many other victims” captive in the area.

Following the report, detectives swiftly mobilized and located the 39 foreigners, all of whom were unable to communicate in any Nigerian language. The victims were immediately evacuated to safety and are currently in protective custody, pending profiling and coordination with the Malian and Ivorian consular authorities.

The recent rescue of 39 foreign nationals in Nasarawa underscores the persistent and insidious threat posed by human trafficking networks in Nigeria. This case highlights not only the vulnerability of migrants seeking better opportunities abroad but also the creativity and ruthlessness of traffickers who exploit trust for profit. Swift action by law enforcement has prevented further harm, yet it also serves as a stark reminder that combating human trafficking requires sustained vigilance, cross-border cooperation, and public awareness to protect the most vulnerable.

This incident highlights the growing threat of human trafficking networks in Nigeria and underscores the importance of vigilance, timely reporting, and cross-border collaboration in protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
