Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for a renewed and united national commitment to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030, as the country joined the rest of the world to commemorate World AIDS Day 2025.
In her message marking the day—celebrated under the global theme “Overcoming Disruptions; Transforming the AIDS Response”—the First Lady acknowledged the progress Nigeria has made in HIV prevention, treatment, and care. She noted, however, that the country must sustain and accelerate these gains to achieve an AIDS-free future.
Senator Tinubu stressed that “every Nigerian deserves access to life-saving HIV services without fear of stigma or discrimination,” underscoring the urgent need to eliminate social barriers that keep people away from testing and treatment.
She appealed particularly to young Nigerians, urging them to take charge of their health by getting tested and seeking treatment where necessary—highlighting the growing importance of youth involvement in the national response.
The First Lady also called on communities across the country to show compassion and support for people living with HIV, warning that stigma remains one of the major challenges slowing down progress in the fight against the virus.
As part of her goodwill message, Senator Tinubu wished Nigerians a meaningful and reflective World AIDS Day, reminding the nation that ending AIDS is possible only through collective effort, sustained awareness, and stronger community engagement.
This year’s commemoration comes at a critical time, as Nigeria works to rebuild momentum and strengthen health systems amid global disruptions that have affected HIV response efforts.
