Enugu State police have arrested a 51-year-old man, Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu, for allegedly killing his 19-year-old maternal cousin, Loveth Uloma Nwangwu, in Nsukka. The shocking incident reportedly occurred just days after the victim lodged complaints against him for sexual abuse, defilement, and threats to her life.
Police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe described the act as a “gruesome and heartbreaking tragedy”, noting the disturbing timing of the crime during the festive season.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the killing. This case has intensified concerns over the safety of young women in the state and the urgent need for swift legal interventions in sexual abuse cases.
Stone Reporters observed that this tragic incident highlights a dangerous pattern in Enugu and other states: victims of sexual abuse often face retaliation, particularly when complaints are lodged without immediate protection measures. The case exposes gaps in community safety structures, the slow enforcement of protective laws, and the urgent need for coordinated action by law enforcement and social services to safeguard vulnerable individuals before complaints escalate into deadly outcomes.
